Olav Magnusson was the only Norwegian king between Magnus Berrføtt (1093-1103) and Sverre Sigurdsson (1177-1202), who put his name on coins. Ironically, the same Olav was considered such an insignificant king that he was not allocated a sequence number in the list of kings. Therefore, the recent King Olav should not have been Olav V, but rather Olav VI. Olav Magnusson struck bracteates with a cross and an edge inscription reading OLAVI REX (King Olav). |
