Magnus Lagabøtes mynthistorie

Magnus Lagabøte's coinage

Mint site:
Bergen (?)
Mint-master:
Unknown
Monetary units:
Penny, quarter-penny
Edge inscription:

Magnus Lagabøte (Magnus the Lawmender, 1263-1280) resumed the minting of double-sided coins after many years exclusively devoted to bracteate coinage. The double-sided coins provide more reliable evidence for historians since both pennies and quarter pennies were struck with the king's name.

These coins did not indicate the mint site, but on some of the quarter-pennies there is the letter "B", probably indicating that under Magnus Lagabøte coins were minted in Bergen, if not elsewhere.

The edge inscriptions on the reverse are religious aphorisms such as BENEDICTUS DEUS, "God be praised!", SIT NOMEN DOMINI BENEDICTUM, "The name of the Lord be praised!" and CRUX CHRISTI, "The cross of Christ".
