After the instatement of the new king in 1991, the minting of the five-krone and one-krone was continued with Harald V's portrait, this time facing the right. Planning a completely new coin series was given added momentum and in 1993 there was an open competition for the coin engravings. All denominations, from 20-krone to the 50-øre, were to be renewed. The revival of Norwegian traditions in form and ornamentation was given particular encouragement. The winner was sculptor Nils Aas whose designs are found on the obverse- and reverse of the 20-krone and 10-krone. Submissions by other contributors were selected for the five-krone, one-krone and 50-øre. The whole coin series was completed in 1999. |
