A considerable
number of finds have been made in Tønsberg. Hoards, church finds
and a series of stray finds from the Viking age, the Middle Ages and more
recent times have been unearthed during archaeological excavations of the
foundations of the town. A number of more accidental finds have been made
at Slottsfjellet.
In 1898, 122 Swedish coins and one German coin were found at the site of Bredestuen, a building on Slottsfjellet. In 1878, approximately 300 Norwegian and foreign bracteates from the 1300s and the 1400s were found at the site of the Lavrans Church. In 1855, nine English gold nobles and two Dutch gulden were found in the cemetery by St. Lavrans Church. All the coins were from the 1300s and the 1400s. |
