During the years 1959-1970, approximately 29 coins were found in the course of archaeological excavations of the Viking marketplace, Kaupang. Most of the coins were found in the "black soil quarter" that was once the settlement area. A few of the coins were found in graves. 

Most of the coins were Arabic dirhams, but some Frankish and Anglo-Saxon coins were found as well.
