In 1953, 790 coins were found during archaeological investigation in Hvaler Church in Østfold. During a new archaeological excavation in July 1984, another 210 coins were found. A total then of 1000 coins have been found under the floors in Hvaler Church, most of them from the Middle Ages. The coins are mainly from Norway, Denmark and Sweden; a few are from non-Nordic countries. The oldest coins are bracteates from the time of Håkon Håkonsson (1217-1263).
