TRONDHEIM

Dronningens gate 10 in Trondheim, Sør-Trøndelag

On 4 September 1950, during construction work in Dronningens gate 10 in the centre of Trondheim, more than 964 coins were found together with unminted silver.

Next to the find from  Årstad in Rogaland, this is Norway's largest Viking hoard. The content is typical of hoards from the late Viking age, with 512 German pennies and 372 Anglo-Saxon pennies accounting for most of the coins. In addition, there were Islamic coins and Bohemian, Irish-Norwegian and Swedish pennies.

The most recent coins in the find are Danish pennies minted for Hardeknut (1032-1042). This means that the hoard could not have been buried before 1032, a few years too late for it to be directly associated with the battle at Stiklestad in 1030.
