1820, approximately 1600 counterfeit coins, bearing the names of Eirik
Magnusson (1280-1299) and Duke Håkon
Magnusson (1280-1299) were found at Alstad, in Østre Toten in
Oppland. These forgeries are particularly clumsily made, and their weight
is only half that of the genuine coins.
Unfortunately, the person who found the coins had them melted down. Rumour said that the amount of silver he extracted from these coins was enough only for a fitting on a tobacco pipe – an indication of just how poor the coin metal was. |
